How Saam Fu Adapted to Life During Covid
Without a doubt the global covid pandemic impacted lives in ways hardly anyone thought possible. No one knew what to expect as life seemingly came to a sudden halt. Saam Fu had to stop operations. We had to cancel classes and lion dance performances as the state went into lockdown. Everything was on hold for a while as our sifus contemplated what the next step should be.
So how do you continue to teach kung fu with no in person gatherings allowed? Our sifus decided to hold online classes via Zoom. Training online via a screen certainly took adjusting. It wasn’t the same as in-person learning, but it was something. Credit goes to the sifus and our students’ love of kung fu that training was possible even during covid lockdowns.
Adjusting to the “New Normal”
Eventually the world learned to navigate life during covid. Saam Fu also learned to adapt, and in-person training resumed. To ensure the utmost safety, limited spaces are open for in-person classes. Temperatures are checked upon arrival. Masks are required on the practice floor. Social distancing is in place. Classes are simultaneously streamed via Zoom for those that want to continue online training. The safety of our students is a priority.
Saam Fu also resumed lion dance performances. To keep our performers as well as our patrons safe, we needed to adjust our protocols. Our lion dancers wear masks under the costume. As much as possible, direct contact between the lion and guests are limited. Feeding the lion directly is not allowed at this time. Assistants are there to help collect any offerings for our lions. These measures are in place to protect our performers as well as the audience.
Saam Fu Strong
It is due to our sifus’ incredible dedication that Saam Fu students could continue training during these difficult times. Recognition also goes to our students. Their love of kung fu and lion dance make it all worthwhile. It is with this level of commitment that Saam Fu has been preserving and teaching traditional Chinese martial arts for over 10 years. Not even covid could break up our kung fu ohana.
